Life Enrichment Senior Center in DeFuniak Springs Is Building Community for Local Seniors
More than a place for activities, the Life Enrichment Senior Center is helping older adults in DeFuniak Springs stay active, connected and engaged in the community they call home.
For some people, walking through the doors of a senior center is simply a way to find something to do. For others, it can change the trajectory of their lives.
In DeFuniak Springs, the Life Enrichment Senior Center (LESC) offers a glimpse of what aging in a community can look like when older adults have a place where they are known, needed and welcomed.
For the past 14 years, manager Susan Bakalo has been at the center of that work. But the story of LESC is bigger than any one person. It is a story about what happens when a community creates opportunities for older adults to keep moving, keep contributing and, perhaps most importantly, keep belonging.
Consider Fred.
When he first arrived, he was recovering from multiple surgeries and physical therapy and had little interest in becoming part of the center. Bakalo challenged him to give it a month. He started with Wii bowling and the fitness room.
Then she gave him a job.
Fred began helping other members use the gym and became a fixture at the center. He eventually became the No. 2 Wii bowler in Florida’s National Senior League. Before he died, he told Bakalo that his $60 membership was the best money he had ever spent and that she felt like a daughter to him.
Then there was Peggie, an 83 year old widow who spent months calling the center before finding the courage to walk through its doors alone. What she wanted wasn’t necessarily a fitness class or a game. She wanted people.
Today, she rarely misses a potluck, bowls regularly and meets a group of 10 to 12 members for lunch each Wednesday. The people who were once strangers have become friends and, in some cases, family.
And when one Vietnam veteran and double amputee faced eviction with nowhere to go, LESC became something more than a gathering place. Bakalo reached out for help. Members responded. One found a rental. Another paid for a U Haul. Others helped cover the deposit and utilities. Within four days, a group of people, many of whom had barely known one another, helped move him into a new home. These aren’t simply stories about a senior center. They are stories about aging in a community.
As people grow older, the things that sustain a good life can change. Work may disappear. Children may move away. Spouses and friends may die. Physical limitations can make old routines harder to maintain. What doesn’t disappear is the need to belong.
That is where places like the Life Enrichment Senior Center matter.
A fitness room can help someone stay strong. A bowling league can provide a reason to show up. A potluck can turn acquaintances into friends. A volunteer opportunity can remind someone that their experience and abilities still have value. And when life takes an unexpected turn, those relationships can become a safety net. Connection is not a luxury. It is infrastructure.
The strongest senior centers don’t simply fill a calendar. They create opportunities for people to remain active, useful and connected to the communities they helped build. That matters in DeFuniak Springs. Because aging well isn’t simply about healthcare, exercise or staying busy. It is also about having somewhere to go. People to see. Something to contribute. And a community that notices when you aren’t there.
The later years aren’t necessarily about slowing down. Sometimes, they’re about finding a new reason to keep going and knowing there are people nearby who will keep going with you.
