Freeport on the Move
Based on the latest Planning & Zoning Report from City Planner Latilda Hughes-Neel, Freeport is quietly reshaping its future. A wave of development projects — many still moving through the review and approval process — signals that the city is preparing for remarkable change. From large-scale housing communities and townhomes to new medical facilities, retail centers, and even a food truck court, the Planning Department reports that activity is steady across every sector.
What’s striking is the scale: hundreds of single-family lots are planned in neighborhoods like Magnolia at the Bluffs and Owls Head Farms. Multifamily projects, including Bishop’s Landing Apartments and The Oaks at Freeport, could bring more than 100 units each, while larger concepts like King’s Crossing North envision a blend of single-family and nearly 1,000 multifamily homes.
But it’s not just rooftops. Freeport’s commercial and community heartbeat is strengthening, too. A new medical center, brewery, daycare facilities, and churches are all in process, along with infrastructure upgrades to roads and stormwater systems designed to keep pace with the city’s expansion.
For now, many of these projects remain in planning stages — pending approvals, awaiting council consideration, or tied to infrastructure commitments. Still, the scope of what’s on the table suggests Freeport is stepping into its next chapter: evolving from a pass-through town into a place with momentum, opportunity, and a clear eye on the future.
