A Park for All to Enjoy
Adaptive playground equipment at Florence Park invites every kid to play
By Wendy Dixon
It might look like the Florence Park Playground enhancements came together quickly, but the fully accessible park has been in the works for five years. This, according to DeFuniak Springs city council member Anthony Vallee. “I’m so excited by this first phase of improvements to Florence Park,” he says. “Before I was a city council member, former city council member Kevin Crystal approached me for help on an accessible playground concept. We weren’t successful. But now, years later, the project came together because so many different groups and entities are working together on this.”
Nestled in a triangular border between 11th Street, Clay Street, and Ellisor Street in DeFuniak Springs, the refurbished park features new ADA-compliant equipment. This marks a significant moment for the City of DeFuniak Springs, as it becomes the first park in the city to provide inclusive facilities for individuals of all abilities. The introduction of ADA-compliant playground equipment reflects the city’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and enhancing community engagement. Kids can let their imaginations run wild. Visitors can enjoy a more welcoming and enjoyable park experience, fostering a sense of belonging and creating lasting memories for all.
Florida Power and Light gifted a solar bench to Main Street DeFuniak Springs that they, in turn, are gifting to the playground. “We are installing shade over the playground equipment and providing more seating for caregivers,” Anthony says. “We’re also working on bathrooms as I speak and are looking at ways to improve accessibility to the entire area as well.”
While the park is coated with chips on the surface, the plan is for a smooth rubberized surface in the near future. Wheelchair access is available, and will be more navigable once the smooth rubber surface is placed. Other features of the park include a bridge with ramps, as well as a swing chair designed for people with mobility issues.
The City of DeFuniak Springs Maintenance Department will be adding more equipment as it arrives. When the park is completed, the city will present Florence Park during a grand opening ceremony.
“I’m so happy with what has been accomplished,” Anthony says. “I know this will improve the quality of life for our residents.”
