Lifelong friends and Walton County residents explore Glamping in North Walton

When three couples decided to celebrate their friend’s 53rd birthday they immediately knew they wanted to try glamping together. Not only because it suited the birthday boy’s sense of adventure, but also because everyone wanted to escape the beaches of South Walton during Spring Break.

Located north of downtown in DeFuniak Springs, just off Hwy 331, the award-winning Twin Lakes Camp Resort is nestled between two lakes with an estuary-like setting. The resort has multiple accommodations offering lake houses, cabins, tiny homes, waterfront RV spots and an array of fabulous glamping tents with cinematic views. The location was far enough to feel like a vacation getaway, but close enough to home knowing we all had to get back the next day.

“We made it there first,” says Dan, the birthday man of the hour. “We brought firewood and everything for a shrimp boil. The trip across the dam with our full load was an experience in itself; but easy with the carts the resort provided us. We saw people fishing and enjoying the Twin Lakes from both sides of the dam.”

Across the dam are waterfront glamping tents.

Arrival was a fun process of discovering who had which tent. Each couple worked together to unzip their astonishing screened views from tented walls. All three tents had water views, while one had a private dock (and a clawfoot tub)!

The grounds in front of the tents came with firepits and picnic tables. “We put the tables together and covered them with parchment paper. Thankfully the shrimp boil dinner was perfect as finger food because we forget utensils,” says Tina.

As the birthday celebration ensued, the group laughed and told stories throughout the night by the fire. Traditional fireside S’mores were had by all those who love sweets. Later everyone retreated to their king-sized beds. Some zipped away the stunning views due to the chilly evening air, while others cranked up the heat – not willing to miss the morning sunrise over the water from their comfortable bed.

Before the sun began to rise, the sounds of birds chirping filled the air. “I couldn’t believe the variety of birds I heard while lying in bed. It was extraordinary. I felt like I was in the middle of an estuary,” says Michelle.

Throughout the morning we razzed each other about who was the most fun, AKA, who had too much wine. We also made a list of all the things we wish we had time to do on the resort while making plans to return for another adventure together.
