Off the Beaten Path
A Hidden Lake Retreat in North Walton County
It started with a detour. You know how it goes—you’re driving down HWY 331, thinking about nothing in particular, when something catches your eye. In this case, it was a small cottage, tucked just far enough into the woods to make you wonder. Curiosity got the best of us, so we turned off the main road and followed a winding path past towering oaks and glimpses of open water. That’s when we found it—Seacoast Estates.
The Kind of Place You Don’t Expect to Find
There’s something about this spot that makes you want to linger. Maybe it’s the way the trees lean over the water or the quiet hum of nature filling in all the spaces where noise usually lives. It’s a lake meant for fishing, birdwatching, and taking deep breaths.
Turns out, the land around it—big, sprawling 1-to-5-acre lots—has been made available for those who want to claim a little corner of this haven. Not a master-planned development, not a place with matching mailboxes, but real space to build something of your own. A cabin, a retreat, or just a patch of land to escape to when the world feels too loud.
Close to Somewhere, Yet Far Enough Away
For all its seclusion, Holly Lake isn’t isolated. DeFuniak Springs and its historic downtown are just a short drive away, with its vintage charm, good food, and front-porch conversations. And if you need a dose of salt air, the white-sand beaches of South Walton are about 30 miles south.
But standing there, watching the late afternoon light stretch across the lake, it didn’t feel like a place to pass through. It felt like a place to stay awhile.
We figured if we were intrigued, you might be too. So, if you’ve ever dreamed of a quiet hideaway just off the beaten path, this might be one worth checking out. Just keep an eye out for that little cottage in the woods—it might lead you somewhere unexpected.
