The Lake That Built A Town
A Film Rooted in DeFuniak Springs
HWY 331 has released a new short documentary exploring the story of DeFuniak Springs—how a place shaped by water, architecture, and community grew into the town it is today. The film brings together personal memory, local history, and lived experience to trace how the lake and its surroundings influenced settlement, culture, and everyday life.
Produced in partnership with the SOWAL Foundation, the project reflects a shared commitment to preserving and elevating the stories that define Walton County and the surrounding communities.
Rather than relying solely on archives, the film centers the voices of people who know DeFuniak Springs best. Through firsthand accounts, the story moves beyond dates and maps, revealing how history is carried forward through families, work, and shared civic life.
With Gratitude
This project would not have been possible without the generosity of those who agreed to be interviewed and share their time, stories, and perspective. HWY 331 extends sincere thanks to Jonathan R. Bryan, PhD, PG; Dr. Melinda Henderson; Bobby Beasley; Mayor Bob Campbell; Marie Hinson; and Diane Pickett for their contributions, which brought depth, accuracy, and authenticity to the narrative.
Special thanks as well to the History of DeFuniak Facebook page for its ongoing stewardship of local history and for being a valuable resource throughout the research process.
