Wild Love
The E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center shares the love of nature
By Wendy O. Dixon
Walton County conservationist M. C. Davis opened the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center on Nokuse (pronounced “no-go-see”) Plantation in Freeport in 2009. Named after renowned scientist Dr. E.O. Wilson, whose life’s mission was to education the public on the importance of biodiversity, the learning facility provides interactive hands-on science curriculum for students.
Biophilia means “the innate love of nature.” Davis built the facility, the only one of its kind nationwide, to pass that love of nature on to today’s children and to generations to come. The center is meant to enhance kids’ love of nature while helping them to learn about the region in which they live. This kind of classroom experience enhances learning in ways a book cannot.
At the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center, students get the experience of being close to nature, which will hopefully ignite the awakening of their own biophilia and guide children to an awakening through which a love of life is born.
With live animal exhibits, interactive displays and programs, outdoor classrooms and nature trails, children leave the center feeling at least a little like naturalists.
Relationship Goals
Gopher tortoises, the only species of tortoise found east of the Mississippi River, make their homes in burrows that also provide homes for hundreds of other animals. The indigo snake, the Florida mouse, the gopher frog and the burrowing owl are among the critters that live peacefully with them.
