In Walton County, few names are as synonymous with local broadcasting and community engagement as Art and Marty Dees. Their journey through the world of radio has not only chronicled the evolution of DeFuniak Springs but has also played an integral role in shaping its social fabric.
This Saturday, January 4th, 2025, DeFuniak Springs will come alive with a celebration that transcends the bounds of time—a tribute to 200 years of Walton County’s rich history. The Walton County Bicentennial Celebration invites residents, newcomers, and visitors alike to embrace the legacy of this extraordinary community while looking forward to its bright future.
Sweet Southern Comfort has rooted their reputation at their diner along State Road 20 in Freeport. Their praised home-cooking has patrons lining out the door. “We know about 90% of our customers by first name,” says Tammy Henderson, co-owner and operator of Sweet Southern Comfort. “We like to make people feel like they are welcome, whether they are stopping in to check out our progress here in DeFuniak Springs, or dining with us in Freeport.”
Marty and Art Dees are all smiles as they celebrate homecoming during the Walton High School parade. Art, having broadcast the football games for Walton County from 1980 to 2014, is being inducted into the Walton High School Sports Hall of Fame. “Not for my physical abilities,” he jokes. “Marty deserves the award too, because she had to do the legwork behind the scenes before the games.”
Having produced over 100 large scale commissioned murals for brands such as Red Bull, Wrangler, Patagonia, Top Golf, WeWork, Google, Spotify and more, Nathan Brown arrived to Defuniak Springs in 2022 with a clear vision for the mural that now adorns the walls of the CCB Community Bank Building off Baldwin Avenue and 7th Street.
